definitely take a whole day to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum. we didn't have time to visit herculaneum, but will definitely go the next time. also, you need a day at the museum in naples to see all of the recovered artifacts from the two places. we also, unfortunately, didn't have time to go through the entire museum.

you can also take a day to visit Capri or Sorrento (i believe that's the other island). we did capri and loved it.

our only problem was that we went in winter, so much of it was closed. it would be much more crowded in summer, but there would also be more to do.

you can also take the train to rome. it's only a few hours away and there is SOOOOO much to see in Rome, you'd need at least 5 or 6 days to see it all!(by no means am i saying that you can see everything Rome has to offer in 5 or 6 days, merely that you can hit the hot spots in that time.)

I was there this time last year - yes, definitely go to Pompeii and you can also hop on a bus and go to a little coastal village for a day out of the city. I went to Positano, which is great despite being very touristy. And there are loads of others should you want to get away from the tourists.

If you're doing it on your own, you might want to pick up a Rick Steeves guide, it was helpful when we did Italy years ago. Would suggest doing the Amalfi coast, which is gorgeous!!

esque will become famous soon enough
sorrento (a town, not an island) is not that great, but the amalfi coast (Positano particularly) is a must see. Beautiful. I also loved Capri, but I was there in low season, not too crowded.

If your going out to dinner try and team up with someone who has returned to the city after a long absence.
I did this by pure chance with a mate whos family had emigrated some 20 yrs before. My friend was able to speak in the local dialect but with an obvious ( to the bistro manager ) none Niapolitan defect. A few questions between them and it was like welcoming back a long lost brother.

Best night of my life ( on a pure food and drink level ) ever.

We have just been through Naples last week. Definately recommend a day trip to Pompeii. Will need about 4 hours to see it all. We stayed in Amalfi which is about 80 minutes by bus from Sorrento. The bus ride alone is amazing

The NY Times link didnt work for me, but i think it was alluding to the fact that Napoli is rife with crime. Be very aware of pick-pocketers particularly in the train station. We saw it happen as we got on, they work in teams with one to distract and another to pick-pocket
