Not looking for anything fancy. Basically, all I want is to have my own server (own hardware and own OS) put somewhere with an always-on connection (very low bandwidth requirements) and a static IP. How much would that cost?

You can get a static IP for a few hundred extra from providers like Netfront.Net or Netvigator if you opt for a business connection. That will allow you to keep your server @ home (or in the office).

Hi there

Me has just acquired a Synology Disk Station Buit in web server, ftp, MySql and PHP. I don't have a static IP address, so use DynDNS, which works just fine.

The disk station itself is comparable in size to a Lynksys WRT54g router. Dinky. And with the right choice of HD it is very quiet, which is great if you have to live with it in close proximity.

Disadvantages: price ($1450 HKD + HD), no mail server yet (although some owners have modded theirs), and unsuitable for high bandwidth.

Advantages: compact, quiet, cool and efficient (14w I think).

Please see links for more info:

Don't forget to check out the Synology forums as they have a lot of useful suggestions and tips on picking the right harddrive.

Hope this helps!
