California to HK

Hi,

Next week, my company will be offerring me a relocation package for a 3-4 year assignment in HK. For those that have gone through this, is there anything I should ask for that doesn't normally come with a standart relo package?

Also, can someone recommend or let me know a price range for a 1 BDR serviced apartment close to the Central District(If this is a good location to live)?

Has anyone moved to HK from Cali? Damn... I'm going to miss this place!!!

First of all where in Cali? Northern- yeah you prolly will miss it. Southern, no way in hell. I don't know much about relo packages- make sure you have enough for housing. If you're used to LARGE nice "apartments" make sure you have at least $5,000USD for housing. If you have kids make sure their school costs are covered But don't let my opinion scare you others on here prolly have a better idea of what you should ask. I just moved out from LA on my own- no "package" from a company. I honestly don't miss the trash (people) of LA or the place in general. No offense to anyone that loves it there. Only thing I miss is Trader Joes. Hoep that helps a little! Hong Kong is great I love it, you'll love it, everyone loves it here (aside from the humidity- but you'll get used to sweating constantly after a while) I never want to go back to the US. Keep in mind- this ain't cali never will be, so lose your attachments before you come.

Californication!

As I understood it, we are all supposed to "dream of Californication"

Well, according to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers anyway.

not sure there is such a thing as a standard relocation package as companies try to cut costs every way they can. so here are a few things off the top of my head that may or may not be standard by their standards but would be nice:

-home leave each yr or every other yr (they pay for your flights)
-subsidy for a club membership, especially if you have kids
-yes, a BIG budget for housing--look at the real estate websites for an idea of what's big
-real estate agent fees
-serviced apartment until you find a place to call your own
-medical benefits similar to what you have now (though be warned that maternity is seldom covered in standard insurance schemes it seems)
if this is an issue, get yourself some supplemental insurance from a co that specializes in expat insurance
-all moving expenses for your household goods, inlcuding air-freighting of a few boxes of stuff you'll need immediately. sometimes companies give a limit as to how many cubic feet you are allowed, make sure you are comfortable with the allowance (moving companies can over the phone tell you a rough estimate of cubic ft needed for say a family of 4 in a 4 bedroom house)
- can you pay for expenses and then be reimbursed? if so, then you can reap some major credit card mileage. but might be more of a headache than its worth.
-last but not least, the salary. hong kong might be more expensive than where you are currently living and if so, you'll want a cost of living adjustment.

hope this helps. we're moving soon to hk so as you can tell, it's sort of top of mind! good luck.
