I'm sure you've heard of ESLCafe.com, but if you haven't - there you go! Just make sure you look for credible sources online, as I've heard of some nightmares working in China and Japan, where teachers have gotten scammed for working and end up getting nothing in return. I'd imagine Hong Kong would be fine since it's relatively small, but make sure you're good and safe.

www.classifiedpost.com -There has been a ton lately and your friend can send CV/resume and schedule interviews before even arriving. www.excelhk.com - they work with a bunch of schools supplying teachers and also have their own learning center - good if they have your friends info on file

Hello, I wanted to know the opinions of some members of this board. My sister is actually currently teaching english to schoolchildren in Hong Kong right now. To my understanding, when I arrive, even without qualification, being a Canadian-born Chinese, she had said there would be no difficulties for me getting a part-time job teaching English vocabulary for about $300 HKD an hour. Has anybody experienced or is knowledgable about the qualifications needed? I am considering taking up TESOL before I arrive, but just wanted to know my options before I chunk out for it. I also wanted to mention that I am eligible for my Hong Kong citizenship and will most certainly be applying for one when I arrive.

Mr. Dimsum, You are going to need a TEFL for sure before getting any work. As for finding a job, it is possible, but having a Chinese face is going to give you an uphill battle. But, I know ABC, CBC,BBC's etc who work in the English teaching field. So it is not impossible. But, quite hard.

She actually told me when she went into the interview that she was hired on the spot, alongside her friend actually, whom was from Australia - This was before she earned her TEFL and any other certifications. So needless to say, her situation was vastly different from many of the experiences I have read online. She has said that she can guarantee me a spot teaching part-time during the summer at about $200 per hour (I originally wrote $300 I think, which was wrong). Love to hear some other people's thoughts. Danny |

Without a proper teaching qualifications or in the very least, a TESOL qualification where you have teaching practice (not talking about those online TEFL), what kind of teacher will you or can you be? Just being a native English speaker is not good enough. I know many who can't even get their grammar right.
