Thumbs up Generation W (wimpy kids of Hong Kong)

For most kids in Hong Kong, a little cut on the knee or scrape on the elbow produces a flood of tears worthy of issuing a tsunami warning. There are so many kids that have nannies to blow their noses for them anytime they feel like sneezing. It's really pathetic! The result is a generation of kids without any responsibilities and without the slightest idea of how to perform the most rudimentary domestic tasks. It is sad but this is Generation W. The wimps of Hong Kong are here to stay.

grandcider is on a distinguished road
I have a 27 year old co-worker who lives at home with her parents. Sometimes she forgets to bring her pack lunch and her parents will send their maid to the office with it. I don't know how anyone can receive these lunch deliveries without feeling utter humiliation.

Exactly! 27 living at home with a maid delivering your lunch. That is pathetic!

Ever notice how Chinese people seem to be afraid of rain? They think that they can get sick from rain or something. As soon as there is even the slightest sprinkle of rain out come all the umbrellas.

Wow, I'd sure appreciate a maid delivering my lunch at the office... but only when I'm filthy stinking rich... and she'll be naked and my office will be at home of course.

But I agree... that's just one small aspect of how spoiled some of the HK brats are...

However, to counter the 27 and living at home statement... financially speaking that's a much smarter choice for a single female. If you're female and single in HK... and you're not making all that much money, you're money is just going to waste paying for rent. Sure if she makes enough she can start mortgage on a house, but it's not that easy.

Other than that though, I agree... the maid-spoiled brats and being afraid of not only rain but the sun as well are all too much...

ditto for the urban kids in the mainland. since couples just have one kid they are doted as princes and princes by parents and two sets of grandparents. and since they are so busy with schoolwork they are not made to do any chores. i know 20 somethings who (in there first time away from home in college) don't know how to do dishes, make their bed, etc. even basic social skills since they are so protected and sheltered.
my dad knows people who went out and bought a new car simply because their kid threw a tantrum saying that their old car wasn't the same class/luxury brand as his classmates' parents' cars.

i guess there's spoiled rotten rich kids everywhere in the world though....

couldnt the 27 year old coworker go out to eat lunch? like is she on some serious diet that her lunch is personalized? i mean that's ok. being 27 and living at home being asian is widely accepted. it's only strange to us. but if u're a guy and u're over 40 and still living with ur parents that's freaky, regardless if u're asian or not.

I have to agree with this point. Just the other day I was at a buffet and saw a 9 or 10 year old girl going around with her mother and her maid who was carrying the plate. the little girl pointed to what she wanted, and the mother then directed the maid to put it on a plate for her. it was ridiculous!!

besides being spoiled rotten, i worry about the life skills this next generation will lack. growing up in canada we helped our parents fix things around the house, performed chores, had home ec class, workshop class etc. the kids in HK aren't exposed to any of these things. all 'chores' here are contracted out to paid workers. cooking, cleaning, home repairs, you name it. now, i suppose the HK kids will grow up and continue to do things the HK way, but these expat kids growing up here are going to have a rude awakening one day once they hit the real world!
