I finally got around to riding the Dragonsback on the weekend.

If anyone is doing it for the first time, do the loop CLOCKWISE instead of anti-clockwise. There'll be a seriously big carry at the beginning, then lots of smaller downhills. If you do it anti-clockwise, there are too many small uphill carries to get a decent flow going.

Take the ferry to Mui Wo.
From Mui Wo - to get to this one you turn left off the ferry and follow the pier past McDonald's and the China Bear pub. The bike shop is just around the corner from the pub. It's called Friendly Bikes

Bikes cost from $50 to $150.
We're going to do the Chi Ma Wan peninsular ride.

Bring lots of water! and some energy food and mosrt importantly HELMET and any safety gear!

Bring it on....

Hi Guys,

V amusing reading this thread from the start.

I've just arrived in HK for a 3 month spell with work, flew the bike out with me and I'm itching to get out there.

I would like to go for a ride this Sunday (7th Oct) so if anybody is out and doesn't mind a cling-on then please give me a shout.

Beggars shouldn't be choosers and all that but I would prefer not to ride with a total novice.

Many thanks,

Chris.

Chung Yung Cycle Co.

these guys have a comprehensive online catalogue too. Got some really good stuff in their cramped little store at Sheung Shui. Good mix of MTB and Road gear.

No hire bikes as far as i know, but I've never asked.

Do you think this is where I can buy the cheapest Giant XTC Comp 3?
Chung Yung Cycle Co.

Also, I want to try riding with your group. Do you guys meet regularly in some place and hit the trails right after or do you ride upon agreement?

I wish I could buy the cheapest Giant XTC Comp 3 and ride with you guys soon.

The stores out in the NT are supposed to be cheaper than closer to HK, so yeah, it's probably a good place. But a pain to transport if you live elsewhere. Remember you can't take a bike on the MTR or on a bus.

Or check this link for advice on a bike.
Beginners: Buy your first bike

Don't get too stuck on the idea of an XTC3- most budget hardtails really are much of a muchness, except for the paint scheme They're okay for foothpaths, but if you really intend to get into trail riding, at least consider a budget suspension bike.

If you're looking for someone to ride with, join the Fat Monkey Yahoo group as they seem to be fairly active. The Flying Ball bike store also runs Sunday rides, so you could get in touch with them. Or it's pretty easy to hook up with riders going across on the Mui Wo and Lamma ferries.

Oh, there is also a guy who runs great bike skills courses where it would be easy to meet riding partners. Cross Country Hong Kong

there are a few good bike shops in NT, most don't have websites. One that comes to mind is in Tak Ching Court in Tuen Mun, the guy that owns it does a lot of riding. The stock varies, but he can pretty much meet or beat most deals I think.

Chung Yung is quite good, and their prices also ok. Often what is on the web isn't on hand, and often better deals are in store and not on the website. They're in Sheung Shui.

As far as transporting your bike on bus/MTR, i saw a bag like the link below in Flying Ball Bike co in Tsuen Wan. I didn't buy it in Tsuen wan, but bought this one from NZ on the net. Have yet to try it on the MTR, but the guys at Flying Ball swore that no-one complained when they used the bags they had on the bus or MTR. Your bike basically becomes luggage.
