I know a bunch of the newbie Geoexpaters are itching to go mountain biking so I need to know the following:
  1. Where's the best place to rent good mountain bikes?
  2. What's the best way to get a group of people with bikes there?
  3. Are there permits needed?
  4. How difficult is this trail?

I found the map and have looked at
http://www.hkmba.org/en/images/maps/lowres/shek_o.jpg

but I guess I need to know more about the logistics of it. Has anyone organized an outing out here before? If so, please PM me.
The only practical bike rental option is Friendly Bikes on Mui Wo. Give Winnie or Jacky a call on 2984 2278. They run one of the 2 friendliest bike stores in HK. This is more convenient than it sounds- Jacky can load up the bikes on the ferry, so you can pick them up at the Central ferry pier. To drop them off, you can just load them back onto the ferry.

Best way to get bikes up the hill is to call one of the usual wan-with-a-van services. You can fit 4-5 bikes in a van, depending on how carefully you pack.

Permits- in theory, yes. Though I've never been checked. If you send a stamped/address envelope to the link above, the AFCD sends you a permit back in around 2 weeks.

I don't know how difficult the trail is (never done it). Just don't plan to do it on a Sunday as it's also a popular hiking trail! Go on Saturday morning.

As an alternative, there are some rides on Lantau from Mui Wo. Ask Jacky (but be warned that the standard Chi Ma Wan peninsular ride isn't for novice riders).

Mui Wo

Maybe we should do just a Mui Wo bike trip then. Does Friendly bikes have a website?

The Chi Ma Wan peninsular ride is excellent - but as jgl says not for people expecting an easy ride. I'd be up for doing it as long as there's a mandatory beer pit stop at Ooh La La in Pui O

No website- Flying Ball is the only store in HK with a website.

Just give Jacky or Winnie a call. They open by 9am on weekends, I think bikes are 150 a day, and you can buy a map of Chi Ma Wan for 20.

Let me know if a group ride is organised- I might tag along. Getting over an injury at the moment though.

these guys have a comprehensive online catalogue too. Got some really good stuff in their cramped little store at Sheung Shui. Good mix of MTB and Road gear.

No hire bikes as far as i know, but I've never asked.

Thanks for posting that- that's a fair bit more useful than the Flying Ball site (though that's not saying much!)

Sheung Shui... are these guys the Giant distributors?

hey hey, One idea....

As we are more than one looking for new rides, It'd be interesting if we choose the best shop in HK and get a good deal when buying all of us together.

I'm definitively looking for bicycle with the right features at the right price. Will not spend tons (as did in the past...) for a competition bike which I'll not get the most of it.

What do you think??

Alan

That doesn't seem like too bad an idea.

I just read this article recently:
