I'm a drummer moving to HK in August. Need Suggestions

I'm moving to HK as a teacher, but would love to stay busy playing drums (rock preferrably).

Will it be difficult to find a gig?
What (if any) are the rock & roll clubs?
How expensive are drums in HK compared with the US?

Thanks.

The biggest challenge will be storing and practicing unless you have a bigger flat/house somewhere like Lamma, south Lantau etc.....
If you're any good you'll have no problems finding a good band to join- just like bass players!
There aren't any rock clubs but there are a few places which have cover bands etc.

Hi there. I'm a local who's interested in the band scene here. Well, there are venues for original music here, but they remain somehow underground, so you have to knock on the right door to find 'em. For a start, you may want to check out HK Underground's site

http://www.undergroundhk.com

It's pretty cool! The shows are often held in clubs in Central/LKF and there are indeed a lot of foreign/expat musicians playing here. (check underground past to see how the shows looked like...I played in one of the gig too)

For the other venues you need to know the right people, cuz it's pretty much a small scene that celebrates itself and is (as of now) 95% local.

Thanks for the feedback

Everyone's input is much appreciated. I have a feeling my wife and I will look at living on Llama - especially if space for drums is affordable and won't bother people.

the UndergroundHK is pretty interesting. Do the locals like to keep their bands "local" or should I focus on playing with other expats?

I want to play quality aggressive rock and roll. Dream Theater is not really my thing although it is awe inspiring to watch.

I basically try and rip off John Bonham as much as possible. If interested in what I'm doing now you can check out my band (for three more shows) Gifford Pinchot on myspace. Sorry I don't have the link.

Sabbath, Zeppelin, Radiohead, The Melvins, Queens of the Stone Age, The Shins, My Morning Jacket are bands I really dig.

Looking forward to HK. Thanks again.

- Josh

Josh- loads of bands on Lamma and some of the best drummers live there. We have a shared house which is used for practice and jam sessions.

Living on Llama

We will be working in the hills of Happy Valley above the racetrack. What kind of commute should we expect?

Our only other concern about living on Llama would be getting back to the island after a night (and maybe early morning) of partying. Is it difficult / expensive to do so?

Thanks again for taking the time to correspond with me. It is much appreciated!!

It is a 25-30 minute ferry ride and you get dropped in central at the bus stop/taxi stand. It is an easy commute by bus or taxi- the MTR doesn't go to HV but you could get it to Causeway Bay and take a cab from there.
The ferry schedule is the achilles heel but you can take a sampan from Aberdeen- on weekend nights there will usually be a few other people in the same boat as it were.
The bars on the island are good, as is the social life side of going to peoples houses and sitting on their roof having a jam session with a few beers. Most people go out in town andthen head back to the island for midnight and carry on in one of the bars such as Diesel's, The Tinhead and Deli Lamma.
