Cathay checkin

Is it me or is it normal for CX to have just four counters open at airport express? Waited almost 25 mins before they opened one more counter to prevent a riot.

Yeah - I saw that on Monday morning when the mrs was checking in - she had to wait more than 15 minutes even for business class. There is clearly an overloading problem at certain times there.

Of course, as discussed recently, the high value customers (and people travelling with them) have to wait about 3 minutes at most.

they only ever have 4-5 counters there. 2 for biz class, 1 for First. 2-3 for Economy.

What I find bizarre is quite often I get through the economy channel quicker than First (using my Diamond Status)

PDLM, I beg to differ on CX really looking after their super frequent flyers. Either I am really unlucky or you have the real knack for getting upgrades. I had a good run last year but this year I have had zilch upgrades.

Flying tomorrow so will see if I get it.

I have tried the trick of on-line checking in in order to be up in the que for getting upgraded. On a recently over-booked flight to NY they started paying off people to downgrade so my chance of upgrade just disappeared.

Let me know your trick for getting upgraded more often....and getting a seat on my airmiles which I have never managed.

cheers

On check-in I rarely have checked bags these days, so I don't use ITCI very often - obviously at the airport there is never a wait at the First class counters (and they can give you the orange tags and buggy coupons there as well).

Upgrades are far more common on some routes than others - as I'm sure you know, in general (birthdays etc. excepted), you only get upgraded if there's overbooking in the class you're travelling in. I'm doing Manila for weekends very regularly at the moment and getting upgraded about two out of three flights. But I very rarely get upgraded going to Singapore since flights there almost never seem to be full in economy (and often are in business). (An exception here: http://www.cathaytalk.com/showthread.php?t=2742 )

I'm probably at about 80% for using miles when I want to. In the last few months I've used them to get business class upgrades to London twice (and subsequently got op-upped to First in one direction on each occasion), and to get a reward ticket to fly my girlfriend from Manila around Easter - we only planned this at a couple of days notice so economy rewards were not available, but no difficulty booking a business class reward on the website. In the case of the London trips I had to call MPC and waitlist, but they cleared in the end.

I'm not doing anything particular that I am aware of, and I am not a super-high flyer: I only just manage my Diamond requalification most years although I've been Diamond now for over 6 years straight.

Thanks PDLM.

I will probably PM you and get more insight on how best to use the miles for either upgrades or to buy staright tickets for the wife and kid for the summer holidays.

I am similar to you in that just manage the Diamond (based on the 40+ flights) but am only into my 2nd year.

flying tomorrow so lets see what happens....and its my birthday at the end of the week.

cheers

fsklee will become famous soon enough
I normally do OLCI, then check in at the Airport. I have not checked in at the Airport Express in the last few years. I just feel more comfortable checking in at the Airport, in case anything goes wrong. Also, as mentioned, there is no waiting at the F check-in. (Even the line at the J check-in, if any, is short.)

CX J is full in a lot of flights. The chance of op-ups, even that of instant mileage upgrades, is not good. It is better to do mileage upgrade ahead of time. For CX DM, the chance of clearing mileage upgrade is actually very good.
