Advise for flying with cat from Europe

Hello everybody,

We will be moving to HK soon and would bring our cat with us.But we know that cargo is the only option in bringing cats.I was wondering if anybody has some recent experience on this, and also if anybody knows if possible to fly(transit) to a nearby country that allows cats in cabin and then later on change to cargo, as my cat is terrified by travelling. We already had an experience from Dubai to Frankfurt flying (KLM airlines) with her in the cabin where she was just desperate, so don't even wanna' imagine how it would be for her to be alone in the cargo.

Thanks

i wish you luck.(this is not meant sarcastically, but empathetically)

but....i'm surprised that any airline would take the risk of allowing them in cabin...besides the disturbance to other passengers with the mewing of a desperate cat, what about other travellers with allergies? i'm very surprised that the airlines would be willing to risk the liability.

Well...in the previous trip from Dubai, we had the last seats in the airplane, with nobody sitting next to us.She wasn't meawing, but would just love to get her head out of the bag to see what's happening around, generally she needs to know we are around. There was no disturbance for the others, some of them at the end of the flight were surprised that there was a cat on board, they haven't noticed that before.

Hope for the best also for the next trip

As far as I know there are no flights in Asia that allow in-cabin pets. I think the best thing you can do is get a direct flight from Europe to try to limit the amount of time she spends in cargo. Also, try to get the cat familiar with the carrier before she comes over..

1/ leave it open around the house for several weeks before you fly

2/ "scent" the carrier with cat-nip or something else she likes so that she goes in & explores it. She may even spend time sleeping in it if you leave it in the house for long enough

Then, the morning you fly, try to play and tire her out as much as possible before she goes in the crate. It will be a stressful day, but it is quickly over. Your cat has probably had more stressful experiences (e.g. vet) so this will pass. Once she's with you in the new home all should be fine.
