Banning My Own Viewers The office tech person is away on holiday and we need some quick info. If we want to ban/restrict someone from using our website, will they actually be aware of the block or will they receive a message in some way?

To ban a person, no. To ban anyone using a certain IP address or (harder) a certain MAC address then yes. But both of these are easily circumventable using high anonymity proxies and adjustable MAC devices.

Lots of ways to do it .. best to wait for the tech to get back. hosts files on local pcs ... firewall ... your own server .. Funny .. I just did a few people a favour today by banning them from our server.

What I want to know most is, do they know you have banned them and what happens should they try to enter the site again?

That's up to you: you can send them a normal error message (like 404 Not Found) or any custom response that you want. But they can always get round the block somehow, even if it just means going to, say, the local coffee shop's terminal. Once they realise they can log on from other places then they will probably work out that there is a block in place for specific locations.
