taxation dates

hi..

ok my time to ask a tax question that i have not seen answered.

assuming i worked for the past 1 tax year (Apr 06~Mar07) in hk.
i should be paying for this year of tax due end of the year.

so now, as I am now evaluating the potential of hopping to another geocity...

what would be the taxation procedure ?
do i have to pay my apr~mar07 tax once I quit my job ? the company does the withholding ?

and on similar note:
do i lose my visa once i quit my job ?
can i still use my ID card to get entree to hk after I quit my job ?

Yes - your employer is legally obliged to withhold your last paycheque until IRD has certified that you have paid all taxes owing.

You don't lose your visa - you can, in general, continue to reside in Hong Kong whilst looking for a new job up until the expiry of the visa.

However, if you cease to reside in Hong Kong then the visa becomes void (not sure how they could police that) and, in principle, your HKID is suspended. The HKID will cease to work in the e-channel when your visa expires, and possibly sooner if they work out that you have left HK.

so is the withholding a formality and they wld expect me to clear the tax ?
obviously 1 month pay is insufficient to cover the tax, so i doubt they will lay a claim on the amount and they just want me to pay then get back my withheld pay.

if i am changing to another company in hk, does that make any difference ?

Does not matter if you're changing companies -- you're still within the IRDs jurisdiction.

What they're interested in, is really preventing you from evading your owed taxes before you leave the country.

ok. so i get it that HR will tell me they are withholding my pay for the last month, and they will probably pass me a piece of paper that i can bring to IRS and sort out my tax on the spot there. then IRS will send them a note telling them they can pay my last month now.

i suppose i wouldn't have to take my own initiative to solve all these. everything wld be more like a checklist i have to follow ?

That depends very much on the competence of your HR department...
