Highlighting Hong Kong Residency

I'm a permanent HK resident, who in the process of job-hunting has been told that the company in question cannot sponsor a candidate for a work visa. This is despite stating in my cover letter that I am a permanent resident and listing my HKID number in addition to contact details. Am I just screwed because I have a non-Chinese name? What more can I do to draw attention to this fact, besides including photocopies of my ID card with highlighted stars?

Listing your HKID number makes no difference - there is generally no way of telling from the number whether someone is a permanent resident or just on an employment or other visa. I think the phrase you need to use is that you have the "Right of Abode" in Hong Kong.

My guess is that the person who is telling you about sponsorship has not fully looked at your application and has discounted you for the job in favour of a " TRUE " Hk'er.
It happens a lot !!

With Permananet ID you dont need to be sponsored and of course you know that. Arguing the point with the agency will just result in getting another baseless reply.

There is a LOT of unintentional " racism " in the industry. A born and bred Cantonese speaker with Western / Manderin skills should get the interview over any other in the majority of agents minds. Harsh but true.

I don't know what PDLM is on about. If your HKID number is a P number is obvious what you are. The stars have other means to define what TYPE of P resident you are.

You clearly haven't a clue what you are talking about. My HKID number started with a P from the day I arrived in HK on an Employment visa. It did not change 7 years later when I became a permanent resident. You should read this page: http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/hkid_frontinfo.htm if you wish to actually get a clue.

(Hint: the letter that normally signifies permanent residency is an A, and it isn't part of the ID card number.)

My ex-girlfriend holds a HKSAR passport and has lived in HK as a PR for most of her life. Her ID starts with V
