Starting a New Business/Registering

How does one go about registering a company name/business in Hong Kong (small business) and how much does it cost?

And what's the procedure for registering a non profit company as well...

Have you tried buying a dormant company?

how do you go about buying a dormant company? is there a listing somewhere? also if foreigners buy a dormat company in HK - does this help with obtaining a living visa?

registering a business takes about 10 minutes at revenue tower in wanchai and costs $2600 for one year.

it is VERY easy and totally not worthwhile buying one that is already set up. (i was suckered into that 10 years ago. i have since opened two other companies on my own without any problems at all.)

a sole proprietorship is far easier for book-keeping, paperwork, opening bank accounts etc. than a limited company. if you want to open a limited company, i would suggest finding someone to help you sort it all out.

good luck!

My understanding is that, with a sole proprietorship, the owner is personally responsible for all debts and liabilities the business incurs.

So there is a possibility of getting scammed.

A limited company means the liability is limited, i.e., only the assets of the company can be taken for debts, etc.. The partners in an LP are not liable.

I could easily have missed something here, so anyone more knowledgeable is free to correct me, especially vis-a-vis HK law.

Sole proprietorship is ok for people who are not taking title to goods and reselling for for example like an importer.

If you are opening a book keeping or tutoring company or something that involves little money then yes, go for the sole proprietorship.
