40 flights of stairs? That must have taken a long time! Aiya.
Last time I was in a building the fire alarm went off nobody paid attention. We all just went on hanging out/eating. In fact I didn't see one person attempt to leave the building lol. (I was in a public housing estate in Tsz Wan Shan with all locals)
I see different culture when it comes to fire here. Locals ignore all fire alarms etc, where as I find expats tend to be worried about living on high floors due to fire risk and pour out of buildings when alarms go off.
I don't see anything wrong with leaving a building when an alarm goes off. Good practice...But, worrying about fire here because you live higher is far fetched. All buildings are made of concrete here. A fire is not going to spread outside of one flat/area unless it is either well fueled or caused by a major explosion.
I have seen flats burnt out here, the fire is 100% contained to the flat. There may be some minor smoke damage in surrounding flats, but I think the chance of you being in serious danger because you live on floor 50 for example is utterly silly. I feel the fire danger on floor 5/10 or 50 is the same.
This is not an attack on the OP or anything. Just something I keep noticing and want to point out.
