I read that it is generally not possible to use foreign ATM cards in Japan, with the expection of ATMs located in post offices.

I also read that all Japanese ATM require a 4 digit pin number.

Anybody knows if I will run into problems with my HK HSBC ATM card, which has a 6 digit pin?

i am not sure. but they do have like plus and cyrrus for some of the bank's system.

for me i usually use my citibank (sg based account) to draw money and the rates are fair, no extra charges.

most of us do it at the airport terminal once we land

Thanks. Definitely want to change money beforehand or latest at the airport upon arrival. Just that we will be in Japan for close to two weeks and I really don't want to carry so much cash. So I will need to use ATM card (or credit card) within Japan at some time. Most of the guest houses we booked do not accept credit card.

errr, frankly, i don't recommend changing money in japan or at the airport.
they are probably buying USD from you at 108yen to the dollar.

do change some before you go. and if you are careful without dropping money its pretty safe in japan (not at the places where alot of foreigners visit)..

i was there for 3 weeks recently, left money/passport in an open luggage in the room for the 3 whole weeks and nothing happened... 8-P

As long as your ATM/debit card has a Cirrus or Plus logo on the back of it, you should be able to withdraw cash from anywhere in the world where the same logos are displayed. Most of the nicer/larger hotels will have a Cirrus/Plus-friendly ATM in them somewhere...saves the hassle of money changers for sure.
