Credit History for Apartment Rental??

Guys, question. how do you normally get an apt in HK ? Do they check your U.S. / overseas credit history when you apply? Or do you just show your bank balance (esp if you don't have a local job yet but have a bigger bank acct to prove you have the funds to pay?) Is credit history international? Ie. if you have HKID, do you develop credit history locally that is independent from the U.S. etc?

any advise would help.

They normally don't do that. But you have to give about 3 months of rent upfront. My landlord did want to check my work contract as well. He wanted to make sure that I can pay rent. Even if you go through a rental agency, the landlord will still want to see you and check your work contract or you need to show them some proof that you can pay rent.

If you're coming here as an expat, and can negociate for your company to be named on the lease (even if they're not paying your rent) then, they don't need all the usual credit garantees. It also helps, if you want to negociate the rent...

It's not like in the US where they ask your credit history for everything, here it's more like they ask for your HKID for everything...

not worried about Ccard since we're set there - just renting apt and potentially buying apt.
