Hi -- I've seens lots of posts about how it is illegal for anyone on a dependent's visa to work in Hong Kong so I've been thinking about what my husband could do when we to HK for me to take a 2 year expat assignment with my company. I know you're all probably tired of this topic but in my research tonight, I found this excerpt (in red below) on the US Consulate website. Am I reading this the wrong way? Now I'm totally confused... thanks for any clarification you can provide.

APPLYING FOR AN EMPLOYMENT VISA

Application for a work visa may be sent by mail directly to the Hong Kong Immigration Department, or may be made through the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in whose district the applicant lives prior to coming. All applicants for work or study visas must have a local sponsor. Dependants must provide proof of relationship. A significant change in regulation now permits a male spouse to come as a dependent of an authorized working female spouse. Adjustments of status are seldom approved. Holders of dependent visas are permitted to work in Hong Kong without his/her own work visa.

It's out of date. That was the situation for dependent visas issued before 1 July 2003.

FYI, Dependant visa holders that are allowed to work are those whose spouses are holding permanent residency in Hong Kong.

Me and my wife just arrived in May 05 with myself being sponsored by my company and my wife as a dependant.
So, since I just received my PR ID card (with all 3 stars !), does that mean my wife is allowed to work ?

If your visa is sponsored by company (i.e. Employment visa) you cant have PR ID untill you finish 7 yrs..

Did I miss something here? You got a working visa and you received a PR ID with 3 stars?

Oops! Forgot to mention I am BBC, born (many moons ago!) in Hong Kong.

Actually, after receiving my employment and my wife's dependent visa, we went immigration to apply for our id cards, the same as any expat.

My wife was approved very quickly and was given a temporary card straight away.
I ended up being passed from immigration agent, then supervisor to another supervisor who were obviously confused with my case (real British passport, employment visa and born in Hong Kong) and explained why its better to apply for PR and not a standard issue resident card.

Didn't understand the benefits, didn't want to go the 25th floor, re-apply and wait another 3 months while they investigate my case...so they waived alll the bureaucracy and gave me a PR.

Besides not having to renew my card, it does seem as though my wife can work now work

Er, what? What does "BBC" stand for then?
