Using GPRS in China

I bought a Nokia N80 mobile phone in Hong Kong but spend most of my time in China.

I can access the internet using WIFI at Starbucks in cities across China for free which is great.

However, I am having difficulties accessing internet/email using GPRS. One of my Chinese computer geek friends told me that phones purchased in Hong Kong can not all access interent using GPRS in China. Anyone know if this is true?

He has also advised me to have my phone modified by having some modifications made to software in the phone. Is this advisable?
