Dammit, another one of the memories I grew up with will now be demolished by smiling local businessmen...

hmmm.. i wonder if they ever consider keeping the structure as is but rehabbing it and turning it into a hot destination, like what they did with Xintiandi in Shanghai. Former per war houses they were going to demolish but then hired an american architect who kept the compound but transformed it into what is now one of the most popular dining/shopping/nightlife areas in Shanghai.

The Central Police Compound

The Central Police Compound will be conserved. Hong Kong government has basically accepted the proposal of Hong Kong Jockey Club for the conservation and revitalisation of the compound. Almost all buildings will be reserved but a huge (as wide as the length of Chancery Lane at the south of the compound) and 160-meter tall (about 50 floors) metal framework will be built on top of the old Victoria prison. Many residents who live at the south of the compound (Chancery Lane, Caine Road, Abhutnot Road, Robinson Road, etc.) complain about the height and location of the proposed metal framework. The designer of the metal framework is the same as the bird nest sports complex for the Beijing Olympic game 2008. Many residents also believe that the reason of building the metal framework at the very south of the compound is the location of the Married Police Dormitories at the west of the compound (Old Bailey Road).

The model of the proposal can be seen at the Hong Kong Racing Museum (Happy Valley) until May 4th 2008. Pleaes call HKJC at 2966-8065 for the exhibition.
