Japanese cell phones

Where can I find Japanese cell phones in HK? I know that most of them don't work in HK, but I know there are some that work on GSM networks too, and I'd love to be able to find one.

Quite a few Japanese cell phones should work here. I think you can find lots of models here. I used to own the v3x which is the same version they used in Japan

There's a store called something like J-Shop which stocks all things Japanese. You could look there. It's in Ocean Terminal near to Chung Yuen on a corner with two entrances.

if you want a phone that you can use on roaming in japan, just get any of the new 3G phones. i have one with me now that works.

if you want the really local AU or vodaphones, i don't think these phones uses sim card.. more like a registered ID that goes with the phone...

I'm looking for one that I can buy to use while I'm in HK, but that I can also use for a couple of weeks in Japan (on a local Japanese carrier, not roaming) then bring back to Canada with me to use on a GSM network. I really like the Softbank phones (my friend bought one here that he uses fine)

In that case just go get any 3G phone sold in Hong Kong. Go to Mong Kok/Sham Shui Po. Look around and do some bargaining. Before you know you will have a sweet 3G phone for a good price.

Just make sure it supports
900/1800/2100/1900 Bonus if it supports 850 as well for best reception in Canada. But, I don't know if they have any quad band GSM/single band UMTS out there.

Perfect, thanks! I'll definately look out for one of those when I go then. Are the prices of Japanese phones really jacked up in HK? I know HK phones in Canada are way more expensive because they're imported :S

Not really. They aren't really imports here. Hong Kong also uses the Japan technology and frequency. So the 3G phones in Hong Kong just work in Hong Kong. So it doesn't need to be Japanese.

The Japanese keep all the best things in life to themselves. You may aswell get "sui for" if you intend to take it out of HK. That will ensure that you get whatever some private dealer can import into HK and the best price.
