Alby,

Well, I guess the way is to ignore them cos I dont think that we should reduce our moral and out experiences to their level... which is against my principles...and yes seems that all the HR assistants are a bunch of ninnys oops dont mean to offend anyone ... but those so far seems like that...

Ignore them....great advice....and their lost not mine. There are some great HR Assistants out there as I have run into several both socially and professionally but they are a rare breed.

serously, in Asia here, I sensed that the hiring process are losing track with the strategic goal/benefit of the organisation.....the hiring personnel doesnt really know whats are the core skills require for the post they needed in many cases and they will then use their own judgement to justify the candidates and end up not getting in the right person.

for example, during my previous encounter in Business Process Improvement positions, they key competence should be the professional skills such as Lean, Kaizen, Six Sigma expertise and professional qualifications......it ends up like many of the hiring units using the industrial experiences, resident status which usually are the secondary factors to become the selection criteria.

usually, industrial experience and resident status only helps to reduce the "warm up" time in the company at the very beginning, the core skills should be a ability to transform the business aligning to the organisation business strategy. So you guys can see many of the business improvement programs in HK here are end up in failure or just like boiling the sea water because the hiring manager dont know what they want and they are very reluctant to accept someone who can work out something beyond their knowledge....so in the end the "change" cannot be achieved because no real "change" agent are bringing in the breakthrough process........

Sorry to be nagging here, I just have too many negative experiences with thew wrong people...hope I will meet the rite one soon....

it just like a man who wanted to run a chinese restaurant but ended up hiring a western cook to prepare "chinese" meal because in his life, he only dealing with western restaurant business and he is very uncomfortable with a chinese cook who are telling him that the chinese cook style can be so different to the western food, which he is familiar......in the end, he still selling steak and fries, but serve with sweet and sour chinese sauce....And he think that is "chinese food"

links. you sound like a friend of mine that's fairly smart but not going anywhere...

did you think that maybe you approach is not correct.
being aggressive is one thing, but being overly aggressive might simply not be liked by asians or chinese..

being able to handle that part of inferior complex of the boss is also part of EQ.. figuring out how to move ahead..

i am not convinced everyone is like that. its easy to put a blame to the system but it won't solve any problem..

and one last comment to the person that's waiting for the cfa result, forget about it. there are just too many of them with a cfa. i doubt i will ever put the tag on my namecard even if i get it... too troublesome and people wld probably find it pretentious

Not there yet. No job/offer yet. Serious efforts since the past 6 months. But I am overseas.

For now, just leads. Several of them. But just that .. leads. I am going to do what I do each time I set a goal -- plug away and keep at it. I change my strategies based on success rate/failures. Let's hope I get to post a success story ... sooner rather than later

My response, "I was not made aware that I needed to make you aware of my Chinese name* in order to successfully and actively accomplish the job objectives being presented."

Her response, "Oh we can't say that as it is against our HR Procedures"

Actually, I do have a Chinese name that has been on my HK ID Card since 2002 and mainland China visa(s) since 1999. Now, I understand the that lingustics can be misunderstood between parties particularly betwn people those who are not 100% comfortable with language outside their native language however, an HR Assistant for MAJOR MNC dealing with both local and international personnel on a daily basis should find more tack in how messages are conveyed.

I am still fuming over this as it happened fairly recently and have even debated if I should notify world headquarters directly of the situation?

[if anyone has thoughts/ideas how to handle it I would be interested in knowing]
they should have put as the pre-requisite for the job application: Chinese name is must.
sometime i feel people hire on the basis of perception about candidate's country, caste, sex, religion etc rather than his talent.
