| | I do agree on this that's why I set up a poll to see how many actually got a job while physically elsewhere. I guess maybe most are in the 'hot' field, eg finance, accounting etc.
I would consider resigning and coming over if I can get a work permit first. The chances of securing a job then would be much higher. For now, I guess I need to continue trying here.
All the best Gert, hope you get a job soon...
One last thing, if there's any chance anyone here who's in the electronics manufacturing field or knows anyone who's willing to consider hiring a foreigner, please PM me. Thank you so much!

| | | I got mine with blood and sweats. Was trying terrible hard on all kind of source, internet,newspaper..etc...
wasnt that lucky to meet anyone in the bar, but i got mine current and previous job on jobsdb....but they are all mcjobs which i was hire particulary for getting something lower than the same level in HK...
my hit rate was like after applying nearly 80 jobs only managed to get 2-3 interviews...and out of the 2-3 interviews the success rate is less than 50% as many of the time the employer will still prefer a local with roughly 60%-70% of the skill because of the work permit hazzle.
There were cases which the employer was on limited candidates...they did called me to interview but i found that is just HR want to meet the minimum ppl to interview before closing the job. There was 2 job i went to interview in the past 3 months were awarded to local who have lower experience and qualification than me....
anyway, being a foreigner here, you will expect to pay out more if to compete with the local, unless you got a red hot luck to meet someone great in the bar...
i am in between to secure another employment but its in Shenzhen, I think i am giving up on the HK site jobs because they never really bother to check up my job skills other than asking me alot of questions on how famouse or how big is my previous employer...Only the boss in shenzhen is straight forward enough...asked a consultant to test my skill and give me the offer on the spot when i passed the test...

| | im working as a programmer here in HK for about 2 months now. i just arrived january 15, 2007. i've had 20 interviews but i've noticed that that they when they see notice that you can't speak cantonese, they'd just tell you "we'll call you again... blah blah blah..."
i got tired of hearing this for a week so i changed the way i do my perform in my interviews. instead of telling them how long my experiences are in using this and that technology, i showed them my projects and i got an offer that day 2 hrs after the interview.

| | | Rose,
you are quite lucky, for IT jobs we have forum members who are seeking for nearly 6 mths and still without much response.
From Jan until now you got 20 interviews? Your CV should be very amazing, mind to share your experience in writing CV?
Blueyme,
Are you a local born Singaporean? if you are, perhaps the best way is look for internal transfer from SG rather than getting a job from HK here.Be prepare for the cultural shock. I found that the local ppl in HK doenst really like Singaporean.

| | | here's how i wrote my CV..
Career Objective: 1 sentence. (don't say you want to learn. tell them you want to contribute)
Education: High School and College
(The next two areas will be your weapon so make sure it's good)
Work Experience/Project Accomplishment:
here's an exerpt:
SYSTEMS ANALYST (Student Intern), PAG-IBIG FUND MAKATI (Government Owned Financial Institution that manages pensions, loans, etc.) [VB.NET, MS SQL Server 2000, MS Access, FTP Servers]
Project Accomplishment:
1. Transaction Processing System (TPS) ? captures all essential data required by an Executive Information System (EIS). Data captured are sent to the head office via FTP server. TPS is to be used by the whole organization of more than 2000 employees with more than 50 operational units nationwide
2. Executive Information System (EIS) ? generates management report that shows the performance of the organization through graphical reports (dashboards, pie charts, bar graph, line graph) which also implements ?Trends Analysis? and performance indicators of ?Key Result Areas?. This enables the senior management to monitor the business in an efficient manner. The system is currently used by the company?s President and other senior staff
3. CORPLAN Maintenance System ? captures the data sent by the TPS. It also creates an alarm for the EIS should there be a new update from the organization?s business units.

| | | Rose,
thanks for sharing, hope it helps us. hunting for jobs here has been tough. The market for local are quite happening now but for foreign job seekers are consider quiet at this moment.....
blueyme,
I think its partly because of the competition between HK and SG in econ generates the feeling. Anyway not all ppl here dislike SG ppl. Some goes fine. But be prepare for sharp questions like "why dont you just work in singapore since singapore always said they are no.1" thats what I heard from my Sg friends something like this was asked during their interviews.
Perhaps you can married with your fiance and get a dependent visa so that you can work here without the hassle of work permit.

They changed the law last May, I think. My hubby is working with a dependent's pass. | | Tools | Search | | | | | Rate This Thread | | | All times are GMT +8. The time now is 04:29 AM. | Partners |
