The owner of the company I work for is a personal friend. Have known him for 13 years and we had set up various deals in Europe and Asia before and had been thinking about setting up in business together since 2000but both ran our own companies in UK and Hong Kong so never quite got around to it.

However, I sold my business in 2005 to another UK company and my currrent employer split from his HK business partner at roughly the same time. I worked on a 12 month handover period with the buyer of my business until June 2006 and then came out to HK full time after several meetings in UK and HK with my potential employer.

Best thing I ever did and only regret I did not do it earlier. The business trades from HK but has manufacturing facilities in Guandong province at a fraction of the UK cost.

Now we are selling huge volumes back in to Europe and every time I travel back to Europe I realise how much I love HK and after only 8 months I think of HK as home.

Design: cold-calling - interviews - referral from an interviewer to a friend in another company! Freelance - from interviews and through friends. My present contract is through my client talking to a friend of mine in a bar.

Teaching: work through the course provider and interviews at Language Centres.

Network! You never know who you're standing next to!

A wise man called Lammarite said this -- it is not about who you know, it is about who knows you, in Hong Kong.

It does work. I have made some really good contacts at some really bad bars.

lol... Maybe you're right. Maybe ppl are more friendly and chatty after work hours and a bit intoxicated.

I'm curious though, for those who got their job from outside HK, do you apply jobs seen on Jobsdb and got the companies to call you?
