Smile Need some suggestions

Hi all,

I'm planning to work in HK in 2009. Your discussion inspires me that I should really do some thorough research on some specific job market before I physically land in HK.

I have a marketing job and I hope I could find a marketing job in Media/Online Media field in HK next year.

How difficult is it for a non-local degree holder to find such job?Anyone knows?

Your opinion is appreciated! Thanks!

Hello,

You would definitely need to do some research first. Do you know how to speak or write chinese? I was actually in your field before when i was in Canada, had interviews with a couple of media companies here and it was difficult for me because i didn't know how to write Chinese and did not understand the local market thoroughly. I just know that if you are planning to work in the marketing field here in HK, they would want someone that understands the local market/PRC market. You can always try CNN, BBC and all those foreign media. "Your goal is your path to success and persistence is the vehicle that you arrive in" =)

Reality BITES !!

Like everything in life - if you desperately want something, there's a way. Legally or Illegally
My suggestions would be to research the country and industries first then do a self assessment on what YOU can provide and NOT just what you would like - blindly shooting out a million customised CV's wont help but possible chance. Rather you should be more pro-active and contacting the companies of interest yourself directly Only speak with the decision makers), as you can imagine not only are you up against the hundreds of foreigners but also locals and unless you have some outstanding skills and achievements, why would any consultant be bothered going through the trouble of lining up tel, video whatever interviews with you than a local candidate who can interview immediately and start in 2 weeks or less and thus their fee turnover is quicker. Selling everything and punt your luck on a holiday visa is kinda drastic but atleast you did be focused, unless you have superior communication and networking abilities .....mingle ....mingle (doesn't necessarily have to be of the local language) - Good Luck, having a degree obviously helps depending what industry but not a must as experience is highly valued as well. Third and final - look for an international organisation in your current home town that has a branch / office of some sort in the country you wish to abroad and out perform all KPI's in a certain period and demand for a transfer

Then again if you're young and can afford time - Why not go for it have a shot - what can you possible loose ......
Remember its not what YOU want but what YOU can give first and convince your new C-level employer - Good Luck Mate !! .... hmm maybe this is what I should do now

re: my above post, I'm going to have to return to Australia on the 11th of July, I'm guessing unsuccessfully, would it help the job search from australia if i applied for a working holiday visa and kept my HK address on my resume? seems i've spoken to most recruiters in Hk and they know I'm returning.

Bearing in mind the current global economic climate, is that my best option? seems there isn't many positions around for my level anyway.

If nothing goes down before xmas, considering 2009 in shanghai learning Mandarin and studying CFA. I want to stay overseas.....

I realized it's an old thread but wanted to ask the exact question.

I am Chinese-American living in California at the moment and have considered relocating to HK. I need some advice on to how to land a job in HK, ideally before arrival in HK. Here are some relevant factors:

--US citizen and HK permanent ID card Holder
--Bachelor Degree in BA, major Accounting
--6 Years of experience working in US Int'l logistics firm, i.e freight forwarding and accounting
--1.5 years experience in CPA firm-bookkeeper/Admin
--Tri-lingual: English, Mandarin, and Cantonese
--Lived in HK between 1982-1992
--Livin gin the states 1992-current

Any advice and input would be greatly appreciated!

How did you land your job in HK?

Huash1,

Im a Chinese Australian who was in a similar position to you and moved over here to HK 3 months ago. My background was in finance though.

I sent my CV to all the major recruiters before I left Australia but I had no interest.

When I got over here I met with all the recruiters
and got my colleagues, friends and clients to recommend me to companies based in HK.

Consequently I met with many banks and recruiters.

However, I eventually found my job networking at the Australian Chamber of Commerce.

My suggestion to you is to network network and network. Talk to as many of your friends and family and tell them to introduce you to companies in HK. In addition, you should email the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and see if any of their members have positions suitable for you.

Good luck.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. Wow, never thought of American Chamber of Commerce. I'll definitely give it a try.

Thanks
