Sorry if this is covered somewhere, but i looked and didn't find much.

you need a multi region player. most players in HK are multi-regional now.

Virtually any player can be unlocked with a code or key combination on the remote - try a Google search for the make, model number and "unlock".

If none of your US DVDs (region 1) work then try a locally marketed DVD (region 3). There are plenty of cheap movies for HKD19. If that works then it is highly likely that your DVD player is zoned or region-coded for this region (3). A new multi-region DVD player is only several hundred dollars.

For convenience I would go to Fortress, Broadway or Chung Yuen. Perhaps make a trip to the 7th floor of Times Square in Causeway Bay where you will find all three stores.

what you're looking for is a Region Free DVD player.

If you've already got a receiver and a dvd player's all you need, I bought my region free Samsung dvd player at Fortress a couple weeks ago. They had a promotion and it was around HK$500.

Make sure you ask that it "plays ALL regions/no region restrictions", instead of just asking if it's "region free". Many hongkies pronounce "Three" as "Free" so they could be confused and think that you're referring to "Region 3" instead. Almost happened to me....
