Macau day trip

We plan on going to Macau on my husband's birthday next week. What are the two best things to do there? Something fun to do on a birthday.

Thanks!

Thanks for your input! We are not into gambling, so I guess casinos are out. About the 'Wynn' hotel show....do you have an idea when it starts? We would like to be back a little early (maybe have an early dinner and return). I am told there is a central place where all tourists go and is always lively. Can anyone tell me what is in that square? If its just food we might end up going up going there anyway. Is Macau Tower worth a visit? Does it have a fee and how much?

OK the square in question is called SAN MA LO or Leal Senado in Portuguese. YOU HAVE to go there and up the hill until you reach the SAO PAULO ruin's, the most famous landmark of Macao.

Aside from that I would recommend the Macao Tower, IF the weather is clear, as you will have a great great view of the 2 Islands (Taipa/Coloane), Macao and China.

I did not climb up there since 2005 and at that time the fee was 70 with one soft drink. or if you want they do a lunch/diner buffet.

I would definitley NOT recommend Fernando especially if you are ONLY 2 ppl. If you want tasty portuguese food in a relatively cosy environment then check out Alfonso III near the Leal Senado or A Lorcha near the A Ma Temple (worth visitng by the way)..otherwise plenty of delicious chinese places.

Enjoy your day and do pay a visit to Sands or any of the casino..not for Gambling but because it is really part of the local community...

Careful with Fernando, there were some bad experience reported on the Forum. Better if you go there on weekdays where it will be less busy and hopefully the service will be better. Other choices for good Portugese food close to the city center are:

Afonso Carrao Pereira
Rua Central, 11-A Macau. Tel: +853 2858 6272

A Lorcha
Rua Do Almirante Serigo No. 289 AA R/C Macau. Tel: +853 2831 3193 / 2831 3195

Plato
G/FL./ 3 Travessa Sao Domingos Macau. Tel: +853 28331818

Afternoon tea at the Rocks Hotel, Fisherman's Wharf is also great. They serve high tea set as well as tea buffet but I went there on a Sunday so you'd better check with them if you are going to Macau on weekdays.

For places to visit, I'd recommend the Macau Museum right beside the St. Paul's Ruin, the fortress is also at the same location. The A-Ma temple opposite the Marine Museum (and near A Lorcha) is also worth seeing.

Enjoy your Macau trip!

PS Yes, do a SkywalkX at the Macau Tower costs around MOP 280. You actually get to walk on the outer rim of the tower with a safty harness. It was a great experience especially during good weather.

If you can find it, get a copy of TALK Macau, a free magazine (kinda like HK Mag) with info and map, it is carried on Turbojet ferries and lounges and the other usual tourist places. It has a suggested day tour that maybe of help. Haven't tried this one yet, but apparently there's a lounge on the new Rocks Hotel inside the Fisherman's Wharf which is generally quiet if you're not into noisy places. San Malo is generally the busiest area in Macau as it is the main draw - St. Paul ruins, shops, restaurants, all the "World Heritage" stuff plus it's the business district. If you want to see the other islands (Taipa, Coloane) might be good to hire a mini-moke for the day.

I would highly recommend against Fernando's, had a bad experience there, check out the Macau forum for other suggestions. Have fun and hopefully the weather will be better then.

Hi,

For me Macau has been all about soaking in some Portuguese Culture and it was Fernando's for me
all the way.

The last time we went was on a Sunday and yes like any other good food restaurant , there was a bit of a wait. But the wait was worth while.Though the
restaurant is far from the city, the place has a unique
ambience and is a fun place to sip sangria and relish
some good food.
