Lowest commissions

Which bank/broker offers the lowest commission on HK stock trades? I'm aware that Boom.com offers 0.18%, while DBS has a promotional rate of 0.125% until June (not sure what it is after that). Any better offers around?

www.interactivebrokers.com

Ranked #1 execution only broker and #1 for lowest trade cost broker by Barron's. HK stocks commission: 0.08%, by far cheapest on HK and all international stocks, futures, options etc. As far as execution only brokers concerned, blows away likes of boom.com or Etrade. Rock solid platform, excellent interface, not a single problem in the years I've used it.

Grandcider,

Interactivebrokers is indeed cheap for trading but you need to figure out the total cost involved with your broker e.g. annual fees, maintenance or minimum charges, cost of collecting dividends. I hadn't heard of Interactivebrokers until recently but they have a minimum charge of U$10/month, so if you're an active trader it'll be more suited to you as opposed to a brokerage with higher trading costs but lower annual/monthly fees.

HK_Newbie100, do you need to transfer money over to US to use Interactivebrokers? Also I couldn't find the cost of collecting dividends. Could you tell me what it is please? They sure do cover a lot of markets.

Chris?they have US, UK and Canadian subsidiaries in total, so you will need to transfer funds to whichever subsidiary you open up with, assuming you can freely choose where to hold an account, which you?d have to check to see if that?s the case. I?m not sure about your question regarding dividend collections because I don?t trade stocks. The monthly charges are waived if you make a certain number of trades a month, although again, I?m not sure that applies to stocks. But I think the bottom line is however you look at it, whatever charges you apply, if you?re after execution only service, Interactivebrokers are hard to beat. Sorry can?t be of more specific help.

By the way Chris, I would be very cautious about investing in stocks right now. You?re seeing what?s happening to the markets. I think it might be a good time to just take a breather, go flat and see how things pan out over the coming weeks and months. Just my two cents for what it is worth.

The cheapest broker I know in Hong Kong is Bright Smart Securities, .065%, which is still much more than Interactive Brokers.
