Internship in HK this Summer.. Need Help with Housing

Hey guys, I am new to the forum. I will be in HK from May 1st to Sept 1st interning at an international company located in WanChai. I will be making around 10,000 HK dollars(maybe some extra cash from my parents) I understand that real estate in HK is very expensive. I was just wondering roughly how much should I allocate for food/entertainment? how much for housing? what areas should I look at that are close to MTR stations and within a 25min ride to WanChai? Also how big of a furnish flat can i afford with that amount?

Thanks for your help
Dave

I really don't know how helpful my advice is, but here goes!

Hmm... well with a salary of 10,000 HKD (a month I am assuming?), I honestly don't think you can really get much. Why don't you try a furnished apartment? I think for your situation it may be the best bet.

Food is pretty cheap, I thinnk you can probably do about $400 a week if you ate kind of average. Entertainment-wise, I'm not really sure, as I kind of blew all of my money on shopping There's quite a bit of stuff to see and do (and buy), though I feel like the city itself is enough to keep you entertained.

And EVERYWHERE is pretty much close to a MTR station, so no worries about that. Good locations to check out: North Point, Causeway Bay, Central, Sheung Wan.

On a random note - how did you manage to score such a great internship?

I was actually thinking about taking a local internship . The local internship offer was a lot higher and I would be able to live at home. I think i just got lucky and applied at the right spot and at the right time. I applied to over 80 places and managed to get about 8 interviews and 3 offers.
Is 10k hk dollars a good internship offers?

Thanks
Dave

Oh... so where are you from? And did you find these companies just by Google searching or did Uni help you..? Because I seem to not have much luck with my internship search - not many replies back yet.

And yeah, I guess 10,000 HKD for an internship is good. I can't imagine many companies paying for their interns, so I would think any money is good money. (Though on a side note, you do have to have either an employment visa or HK ID card to do this gig)

Oh I go to the Univeristy of Michigan. The school didnt help me at all. The career center at my school was pretty much useless. I just made a list of jobs that would interest me and then I would go find companies that I would fit the description. My dad always told me, if you apply to enough places, someone will hire you. LOL it doesnt sound that positive, but its true.
Yea the immigration paperwork takes about 6-8 weeks, I just sent in my paperwork to the company about 3 days ago. They are taking care of my visa. Im not sure if they will provide me with a visa to mainland China.(im an american citizen) I really want to visit my relatives, I havent seen them in 8 years.
Are you in HK right now?
