Dependant w/work ability seeking advice from forum members.

Hello all. I?ve recently learned of this forum and am hoping all of you knowledgeable people can help me with a few questions. My wife is transferring over to Hong Kong for work and I will be going as well. Her company has stated that I will have a dependant visa and will have the ability to work. I have sent my cv to a few places in the past few weeks with absolutely zero response. I have an accounting degree but don?t currently hold any professional designations, i.e. CPA, etc. My current role in the USA is as a Finance/Accounting Manager.

After reading some of the other employment threads I?m very concerned that I may have an extremely tough time finding a job in HK. Based on some other threads it appears there are a ton of people in HK with MBA?s and I may face some struggles just being an expat as well. If anyone could provide me with some comments or thoughts on my situation it would be greatly appreciated. The thought of living in Hong Kong for 2 years without a job is just not that enticing to me especially as I?m in my mid-30?s and two years without a job wouldn?t exactly be helping me move up the corporate ladder. Thanks in advance for ANY thoughts you folks might have.

Lindseybp

Are you making it clear you have the right to work? Make sure your cv has a HK address/telephone number. Also good idea to have ID# on cv.

It is typical to not get a response at all here if they don't want an interview.

As per to what chigger said.

Its always easier to find a job when you're actually in HK, And yes do make it clear that you do not require sponsorship.

Check the salaries out here too and make sure you are not pricing yourself out of the market either as thats a big no no.

Jobsdb.com.hk and monster.com.hk will give you some idea of what salaries companies are offering for similar roles to yourself.

Chase up the applications which you sent when you're physically in HK as well.

HKChigger - I probably did not make it clear enough I have the right to work. I sent out my cv pretty early, before I even have my via/id #. The address is not an HK address either so that probably didn't help matters any either.

Jimbo - Yes, I'm starting to think it will be easier to find a job once we actually get to HK in mid-April as opposed to doing this remotely. I don't like the prospect of heading over without a job all lined up but that may be the reality of the situation.

One other related question, it seems like every job I see online states that the person must speak Mandarin or Cantonese. Is this going to be a hard hurdle to overcome since I don't speak either currently? I plan to learn while I'm over there for the two year term but don't know any right now.

Thanks again for the swift responses! Moving half way around the world is stressful!
