I shopped around for weeks and the best prices I got was at Coxell Digital Camera at Sham Shui Po. Shop 23 G/F at the corner of Golden Building. They also have a shop in Wanchai but I've never been there in 2/F Southorn Center, 130 Hennessy Road.

Also, all dialogue options are available in English and they will give you an English instruction manual as well.

I can vouch for Tin Cheung in TST, at least to buy your lenses after you pick up the DSLR body.

As far as languages, it seems like most if not all of the new cameras now (from the point and shoots to the SLRs) offer multi language support, so you'll be fine.

I buy a lot of camera gear for myself or to sell and the best prices i've seen are in Tin Cheung and New Sankyo in TST. Wing Shing is actually more expensive. DC Fever is another good place (the only one i've been to is the one in Windsor House, there is another in Kowloon somewhere). Coxell sells a lot of grey market stuff and sometimes they even try to pass it off as having HK warranty but when you ask for the warranty card they say it's the receipt, which isn't the case. Other shops in Wanchai Comp also sell some grey market stuff so be careful. They tell you BS stuff saying stuff like, Nikon doesn't have International Warranty for lenses anymore (which isn't the case). If you think you're being fed a line, walk away. And under no circumstance do you ever go along Nathan road in these tourist trap shops. If you do some research online, tourists have had nightmares with the shops here (bait and switch mostly - selling you inferior products but passing it of as better at a higher price at that).

Basically you need to research the particular model you want to get. Check YGDragon.net and print it out even (including the lenses you're looking for... if you are looking for any or are just sticking to the kit lens). Then scout around and haggle as much as you can and get as much freebies as you can. If you're in the know, you'll get some good deals. But, if you aren't aware of the market prices, you could easily be conned.

Hi everybody!

Although this my first post in the forums but I've gotten a lot of answers through reading the banters and advices so I'd like to thank everyone for all the help I got.

I'm thinking of buying a Nikon D40 and the lowest price I found was from Coxell in Wanchai, $3,590.00HKD. When I asked, the salesman told me the body will have a 14month warranty with the shop but the lens will have a warranty with Nikon or maybe I got mixed up.

In Broadway, Fortress & Citicall the price is $4,580.00 more or less.

Is the Nikon D40 ok? Or should I consider another brand? By the way, I'm an amateur photographer and I use to own a Sony DSC-H2 before it was stolen.

Thanks.

looks like that's a grey market one if they're giving you a 14 month warranty. is there a warranty card with it inside stating the warranty is by Nikon HK?

It's a good price though. Have you tried haggling in Broadway? You could do that. They give you freebies as well. Fortress it seems you can't. not sure about Citicall.

it's a great cam by the way. the only thing you have to consider is this. when choosing lenses, get the one's which say AF-S. These lenses will autofocus on the D40 / D40x. If you put an AF lens, it will work too, but autofocus won't. you'd have to manually focus yourself. other than that, it's really a great cam for beginners.

Thanks TallDude! c",)

Sorry for this late reply, Tall Dude... been busy for the past month. I bought the Nikon D40 kit and am enjoying it. And yes, it's the grey market. Mr. Woo, the guy who sold it to me, was forthright about it. He was also offering me the 55-200mm VR for $1,580.00 only. And I'm itching to buy it! Once again, thanks for your tip.
By the way, it's the Coxell at the 2nd floor of Wanchai Computer Centre.
