Queen Mary comes to Hong Kong

Queen Mary 2, the giant cruise ship, is on its way to Hong Kong. I heard that it is supposed to arrive here next Wednesday at about 8 am, it will leave Hong Kong the same day at 8 pm or so.

Unfortunately, it will not be moored at the HK Cruise Terminal, obviously it's too big for it.
I just heard that it will stop somewhere close to Tsing Yi...

Anybody plans a visit this day? Must be quite impressive to see it I guess...

In Australia, where the boat is sailing to HK from, it was a big hype:

Quote:
It was Sydney, Australia's turn for cruise ship-induced madness today as the Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth 2 joined each other in the city. A crowd that local papers pegged at more than 200,000 people lined the shores of the harbor to see the historic meeting of the famed ocean liners, the first time since World War II that two Cunard Queens have visited Sydney simultaneously.

The celebration, which included fireworks over the harbor, caused widespread gridlock and is front page news in today's Sydney papers

the area is called the Western Anchorage and it is the only water deep enough to accommodate the really large boats such as the QM as well as visiting US aircraft carriers.

If it parks near the Tsing Ma Bridge then come to Sham Tseng and you will have a good view, there are public boardwalks all along the waters edge.

HK Tourism just confirmed me that the QM2 will stop in Kwai Chung Container Terminal 5.... too bad.

It seems there isn't a big chance then to see it.

Or are there enough ppl to rent a Junk to see it from very close? That would be great! Probably the experience of a lifetime for any kids...

I saw it last week in Sydney, it was really impressive and oddly enough, even emotional. The QE2 was there too and they had a beautiful fireworks in between both ships, it was amazing! Unfortunately, people (except for travel journalists)aren't allowed inside to visit the ships (for security/terrorism reasons).

What a load of bollocks! Is there anything that isn't done in the name of security these days?

Speaking of which, you should have seen the chaos caused by Cheney's visit in Sydney! Roads closed every time he drove somewhere... I was on the beach when I saw his boat on the harbour: he was followed by three helicopters, four special ops zodiacs, three police boats, it was hilarious! The helicopters were flying real low above the beaches, as if snipers and terrorists were hiding there ready to shoot Cheney!

Apparently there was chaos after the Sydney fireworks. Some-one decided in interests of security to lock all teh car-parks and no-one could get home after. An 80 year old had to climb over a barb-wire fence or some such story. Reminds me of those birthday cards of old ladies doing the splits up a wall.

If anyone is up for an outing to view it that day, count me in. I was speaking to some-one last week who is getting to (at least hoping very hard to) board her as she has a friend sailing on her. I think she said the passangers are all heading to the peak for sightseeing that day.
