Washers, Dryers -- please educate me!

I have an old National washing machine and mini-dryer that came with my apartment. As of late, the dryer hasn't been working (a friend took it apart and said all it needs is a new belt) and there has been water leaking from the washing machine.

Is it worth calling National service to have them repaired, or is it better just to replace them? I'm overwhelmed by the range of machines available. I'm just a single guy who's never given much thought to laundry appliances. Are the washer/dryer combo machines worth considering?

old one prob u can repair one part another part would give way. better to just replace it. there are quite a few washer/dryer combo around that might be ok. but i'm not sure exactly what are your needs. some might crumple clothes us easily.

Washer/Dryers usually get bad press because people don't know how to use them properly. When they try and dry the load they've just washed, it takes them forever, and they blame the machine. The fact is, the drying load is usually smaller than the wash load, so you have to take some wet items out first.

Personally, I prefer Washer/Dryers, as it offers you a drying option, in the same machine, which saves space. What I tend to do is take the wet laundry out, dry it on a rack/washing line until it's almost dry, and then dry it in the Washer/Dryer. This saves electricity, and is better for your clothes.

Fix or buy new? Well this depends on your situation. Will you be staying in HK for long? Have you got any quotes on fixing the old one?

Something else to consider, are laundrettes/laundromats. The service washes in HK are pretty cheap, and convenient, and might be ideal for busy people.
