I think every store (including that site that was just posted) must buy from the exact same wholesalers, because they ALL seem to sell the EXACT same thing. Want Canadian Whisky? One brand to choose from. Gin? same 3 brands. Irish Whiskey? Maybe 2 or 3 brands for that. Scotch Whisky? Same. Everything is the same! There is a grocery store called "City Super" in Harbor City (TST) that has a few imported spirits. They actually have some Japanese whisky (including a single malt) and many different vodkas (including belvedere and chopin) that nobody else seems to carry. When I lived in Canada, I used to order all my specialty drinks from www.spiritscorner.com. I'm afraid if I import it here though, I'll have to pay some crazy duties.

If you guys have been watching the news, you know there's a possibility of the HK govt. introducing lower taxes on alcohol, or even scrapping all alcohol taxes. I think they plan on starting with wine to make HK a wine investor's hub. Spirits will come later.

What's the latest on this, I know its was talked about at one time but then one of the govt officials behind the change was found to have significant wine holdings overseas. He was accused of pushing the change for his on benefit, or some such. Has there been new interest in cutting these taxes? I sure hope so. Thanks, Drew

From what I read, that was red wine only. A start, I guess. "Free the Grape."

Thing is they only say and suggestion but the red tape is not lifted yet.....so when can I have reasonable alcohol? This rate that continues I am gonna spend a chunk of my pay on booze....

There was a small blurb in todays SCMP, page B2, by Enoch Yiu. She basically said the finance community would like to see a reduction in alcohol tax in tomorrows budget announcement by Financial Secretary Tang...but she is doubtful this will happen. One reason she gave was that he is a wine lover and would be seen acting in his own interests (as I referred to in a previous post). Drew

Make sure when you fly you visit the duty free. I noticed that coconut rum was cheaper in Singapore and wine is cheaper in Aussie. Didn't look in Bangkok because (1) having to walk miles in order to find my gate does not make me want to shop in all the stores they are forcing me to pass and (2) I was already at my legal limit for liquor back to HK.

Also, liquor is cheap at the China border. You can pick up a bottle of Johnny Walker Gold Label for like $350 instead of $500 or so it sells for here. Blue Label is also cheaper. Selection isn't that great, but if you like Whisky or Cognac you will be good

The other alternative is to change your palate...Tanduay rum is the best value I've found in HK...it's a decent rum and at HK$49.90 or $39.90 on sale (750ml) from Wellcome you can definitely develop a taste for it Last edited by nina_70; 27-02-2007 at 04:11 PM.
