Considering moving away from Peoples mobile subscription

Hi everybody,

When I just arrived in HK in late december 2006, I wasn't sure I would actually stay here, so I signed up with Peoples on a non-contract plan of Voice and unlimited GPRS data.

They seem to be the most flexible about non-contract plans, offer unlimited data plans and all of that for a very attractive price.

Now that I know I will be staying here permanently, I will be switching to a one year plan to take advantage of better prices.

I do have a few questions:

- Are the Peoples subscribers here happy with their Peoples service? Coverage? I noticed that I had REALLY bad coverage in Hong Hum the other day.

- Are you happy with the GPRS speed of Peoples? I have Nokia Communicator 9300 and if I'm not mistaken, I it supports edge. Still, I feel that the Peoples GPRS service is slow. I have no real data to back it up, but it's just my impression. Also, what I find suspicious is that when connecting to their GPRS service, I need to select 'Peoples WAP'. The guy in the shop told me that it was correct for their gprs service. Is that correct?

- I also remember reading on this forum that with Peoples, when you're using the GPRS that Voice calls will go straight to your voice mail. Is that true??? If yes, is thos a rule for all HK mobile companies or just with Peoples?

- Are there any other companies you would recommend? or am I good with Peoples?

Thanks in advance!

I have never used Peoples myself, but their coverage is thought to be poorer than the other networks. Smartone is pretty good and their service is priced reasonably. If you want the best network regardless of price, go with 1010.

What you're getting with Peoples is unlimited GPRS, not quality.

GPRS is really a pretty poor data solution... if you are a serious data user you need 3G.

PDLM - not always. GPRS is good enough for email (unless you get large attachments) as the volume of data is low. GPRS works ok for IM too.

I prefer a slow GPRS, always on connection which is not metered over the metered 3G connections.

Hear hear. I am a serious data user and I chose Peoples' reasonably priced unmetered GPRS 2G service over the expensive metered 3G service with free handset from PCCW. I check the internet whenever I want to without worrying about additional charges. I can enable email pull-down every 15 minutes from my handset also without care. A Blackberry service is also too expensive here in Hong Kong and I enjoy my sleep too much to want one of those spoiling it.
I have no complaints about Peoples' phone reception since moving over to them last August.
