Know the feeling only too well.

Now is also not the right time to look for jobs in hk etc at the moment because of new year and nobody is leaving till after then.

Are you in HK now?

i guess it must be easy for someone with your language skills to find a teaching job for the time being. they arrange a working permit for you most of the time. salary is pretty good as well and you can look for a it job whit out rushing.

good luck

Ah yes thats correct in theory but not forgetting two things

1. She needs a teaching qualification first
2. She needs sponsorship thus its going to take at least 4-6 weeks for a permit to come through.

Job search

I'm in the same boat as both of you. I'm in Hong Kong until February 23rd!! and then I return to Chicago to finish up trying to relocate here.

I've heard that March and April are good times to find a job because everyone who wants to leave will leave after Chinese New Year.

I'm a computer science major and went from software development on linux platforms to IT Risk management in the consulting realm.

You are technically right, but for #2 that is questionable. Depending how legal someone wants to be. When I was looking for work every company that wanted me to work for them wanted me to start right away while waiting for visa, or give it a "trial" before going after the visa. Only ONE company that I dealt with was willing to wait for a visa first.

Perhaps things may not work like this. Imagine, many ppl left their jobs...but they are out for other jobs as well, even there is vacancies, but HR will received a lot of CVs from the local and so do you think they will proceed with those who need working permit?

i guess , judging from my experiences, you may need to wait until they finished off filling with locals and still couldnt find the right one, then only they will call you up. probly in april or some even dragged into june...

i received emails from hr which they said they wont proceed my application at the moment becoz they found other "more matched" ppl. But i guess the skills require in those applications are not that popular in hk, probly they just wanna tried those locals and will only come back to me if no one fits in...why? becoz i spottted they didnt place the words "not going further with your application" which they usually wrote in the thank you letters. . What i can do is sit and pray that all the ppl they got on hand flung the test....

Ah but certain companies can and will screw you over if you work for them 'illegally' they can refuse to pay you and you have no comeback at all as you're working 'illegally' thus if you take it further you run the risk of jailtime etc.

I'd rather not risk it to be honest. And as you're in the teaching market now then you should know who the dodgy ones are.

And on that note, I'm off to lkf for some beers all on my lonesome!

to jimbo,

no i'm not in hk yet, i'm still in singapore. i'll personally in hk around march and the main purposes is for visiting. thus i hope i'll be able to go for interviews (if any) during that period of time. But i'm really gettin fed up and down, as i really need a sponsership.

i guess working for a bank is a good choice, and i think big organization such as bank will apply visa more easily than other companies, so any recommendations ?

i've cousins in hk and thus i can stay over there the only problem for me is, I NEED A JOB !!!

Thats the thing you need to somehow bypass HR here as they will ignore you or biun your C.V as soon as they know you need sponsorship, They don't want to do more work than is necessary etc.

Ask your cousins in HK if they can try and find out if there are any vacancies in their workplace and see if they can get your C.V to one of the decision makers in the department and ask for an e-mail address and phone number.

Do a follow up call just before you arrive in Hk and try and organise a meeting with that person, As that way you'll bypass HR.
