RTL - how strict is the 7 year rule?

I lived in HK from early 1985, to mid 1991, so was here for about 6 years 6 months continuously. I'm now back again (3 months so far).

Is there any chance I would be granted Right to Land on this basis, or is the 7 year rule completely inflexible?

Thanks

Jen

I believe it is absolutely inflexible - HK must be your place of residence for a single continuous period of 7 years in order to get Right of Abode. That is written in to the Basic Law I believe.
(Right to Land is slightly different, but not normally linked to the 7 year rule)

I did have a look on the IMMD website which does give a reasonably clear list of the criteria for RTL : but that's different to applying for permanent residency.

My argument (such as it is) will be I used to have "the holder of this passport does not require a visa to enter hong kong" stamped in my passport - I've no idea whether that will get me anywhere or not.
