Stammering Hi, Just wondering if anyone knows if Hynoptherapy/ Hypnosis really works for stammer'ers. My younger brother (25) has just come over from UK and wants to try hypnosis, i think it is affecting his job options as sales...anyone tried or know if it actually helps? He only stammers on certain words or letters, in large groups and on the phone....pretty difficult when hes in sales. When he speaks english it seems quite smooth, but in manderin/ canto its really noticable.

Anything will work, as long as he BELIEVES it does. The placebo effect can be very dramatic! Last edited by jayinhongkong; 06-02-2007 at 03:40 AM.

Or if that doesn't work he could just try a speech therapist : preferably one that speaks both chinese and english? Relaxation techniques and yoga might be helpful too...

Actually Hypnosis or Hypnotherapy are more useful as tools for dealing with deep rooted underlying problems. IMHO the best way for your brother to proceed is to see if a course of behavioural therapy will work. As the stammer is more pronounced (no pun intended) in certain situations, it indicates that this is a now a learned behaviour or habit. Work with somebody who can isolate the point in the thought process where the stammer begins, and then modifies the thought process or the sequence. In essence, breaking the habit. Only if that does not work, then start to look at underlying issues. Hope this helps.
