hey
I am in the same boat as you. I have been here for nearly 2months and have sent my cv out to sooo many companies and hardly no response. I have had interviews and the ones i have had have said positive things about my work (i am looking for graphic design work) but they cant give me sponsorship. I really want to work in HK though -- So if anybody knows any one or has any agencies that can help let us know please

Right then

Sounds like I need to organise another daytime networking meeting.

Those interested then make yourselves known here and I'll arrange something for say next week.

Marketing? Nothing personal, but there are a million marketing grads here looking for work...

What can you do which a local can't do - and do more cheaply?

How is your Cantonese? Your Mandarin? What extensive experience do you have of the Hong Kong and China market to bring to the table?

Yes, now you mention it, I am frustrated and cynical... why do you ask?

A cynic knows the price of everything but the value of nothing

Also not forgetting that its the wrong time to be looking for work right now because of chinese new year and nobody is hiring right now.

I should said its really very tough to get a job in hk for junior or middle management role.

firstly is, locals here have a habit to change jobs after new year, so you will be competing with tons of ppl in the market. As for HR, when they got plenty of locals, do you think they will bother to look at foreigner applicants which require extra jobs on work permit?

secondly, i noticed that its not really tough to get those "reputable" studies qualifications in hk, if u notice, a DBA or MBA can get in 14mths, I supposed doctorate is something took 6 yrs to do in my time and now you pay hk$170k and get it in 14mths...forget about the quality of the cert, if does differenciate an MBA to a degree holder ,atleast in the eyes of HR. so the Education qualifications is very much competitive here, unless you are harvard, combridge grads...you also have to bear in mind that there plenty of mainland china MBA, PHD are also flowing around in the HK job market...

thirdly is the communication barriers, one good hiring will usually go through levels of ppl before you get to meet the hiring managers, there is alot of criteria which some are reasonable and some are not, and in many cases is the low level hr filter out alot of applications which according to their "checklist"..so we got MBA with rich profiles but does not able to get much response in 3-4months job hunt.

another reason is, I feel that in many cases but not all occassion, HK is very concious on the identity, and many does not like to compete with foreigners.

I am also in my hunt, which lasted 1 month and only received less than 5 responses out of 80 applications which matching my profile.many said my profile is good and shouldnt have problem to secure a job here as there are shortage of my skills in hk, but the facts is....there could be some kind of structural unemployment for foreigners job seekers in the middle or junior level management in HK.Some employer or probly HR will rather let the position empty until they find a local or picking a local which only have 70-80% of another foreigner applicants just to save the problems with the work permit and cultural difference.

These are just some of my observation, may not be same with others experiences....hope everyone good luck..

Just for quick comparisons,

2 of my friends who are local citizen here are having similar qualifications and work experiences as me.They were getting as much as 3 interviews in a week with just 20-30 applications which are similar to mine. They got their job after 3 weeks when i still continue my job hunt alone.

thats really a big difference with the nationality which i can spotted.

Same experience here...In a lot of instances I match 100% of the qualifications but still no response. I would think that MNCs selling to the US or working with the US would be interested in someone with over 10+ yrs of experience marketing to that audience, plus I have an MBA.....it's kinda depressing....

Any good networking opportunities out there?
