Wired Broadband Hi Everyone, I noticed that the PCCW jacks in the wall can plug in cat 5 cables (internet cables) and it gave me an idea. I currently would like to run a home linux server but my server is in a different room then the router. I thought about making the server wireless but I feel a wired connection may be more secure. So the setup I would like is as follows: PCCW NEC box -> Router -> Cat5 cable into wall jack -> Cat 5 cable from 2nd room wall jack -> server Does anyone know if this is possible or would I need to put the server next to the router for a wired connection?

it should work, maybe you need a crossed or straight cat5 cable. get both and test. good luck.

If you don't have the wired jacks you can always use ethernet over power, Now Broadband TV works fine over it too.

Putting the router in one room will work with ethernet over power, but putting the adsl modem where the server is the ethernet over power will not work as what is one the wire is ADSL. |

I've always wanted to know whether they would work that way. Please keep us informed of what you find.

stylez, The cat5 through the RJ45 wall sockets will work as long as they are connected. Do you have a patch panel somewhere. How do you know these two RJ45 are connected to one another?

The sockets should be connected together because I can connect my telephone line to any socket. The interesting thing about these sockets are that I can plug in a cat5 cable as well so I was wondering if its typical practice in Hong Kong for telecom companies to pre-wire a building for both telephone and broadband.

Being able to connect your telephone to any socket only means that they all lead to the phone company not that they are interlinked. It is only in recent years with certain new developments that some of the landline/internet providers have provided this kind of connection.

Forget those RJ45's... you are not going to be able to use them, without some major work. The fastest way is to go and get 2 ethernet over power adaptes and plug them in your sockets.
