US Tax Benefit to being an Expat

I'm in the "getting to know you phase" of a sister company for a move to HK. A few general questions that I don't feel comfy asking the company yet:

Someone told me that if I work as an expat for at least 2 yrs, then I don't have to pay US income tax???

I see many posts about people trying to find places to live - is it not customary to have the company offer assistance in the "Househunt?"

Any idea what we might expect to pay for a 2-3 bedroom flat, nicely furnished, in downtown HK?

Thanks so much - hopefully, my questions will be more advanced when I get back from an interview trip at the end of the month!

Don't think Uncle Sam or Uncles Bush or Kerry will let you get away for 2 years.

US Tax in Hong Kong

The US operates its tax on a basis of citizenship. Thus, as a US citizen you will be required to file tax returns every year. You will be liable for 40% tax on your worldwide earnings, irrespective of the fact that you no longer live in the US. There are ways around that but it takes some tax planning structures which will cost you a bit.

If you need to know more I'd be happy to explain.

My U.S. CPA says there's a tax credit of up to $85k a year. So you don't have to pay taxes for up to $85k a year of your income.

You still have to file a tax return though.

Talk with your CPA
