part time helper in mid levels.

Hi All,

We've recently moved to HK (mid levels west) and would like to have a part time helper to do the cleaning, ironing etc - 2-4 hours a week.

Can anyone help / have experience with:

- What's the best way to find a good part time helper, agency or advertise directly?

- What's the going rate?

- How can we be sure they are trustworthy?

- Do we need insurance to cover them whilst they're working in our flat?

As always, any help or advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks

As per mat said I used to pay my part time cleaner $60 an hour and that was out in sai kung.

Oh and not forgetting that you can't actually hire a filipino maid thats already working fulltime for somebody else as thats illegal.

You're going to have to look for a local one.

I would say the best thing would be to ask your neighbours if their helpers are good and if they can spare them for a couple of hours a week : most of them will be quite happy to "lend" you their helpers, and the helpers will be happy to make a little bit more money on the side. 60$ an hour is a good rate for cleaning, 40$ for babysitting.
It's not supposed to be legal, but many people do it, and it's no problem. Especially if the helper is already in your building.

It is most definitely not legal, and the fact that other people do it will be of no help if you get caught. If you can?t find a local to do it then go with an agency it?s really not worth breaking the law over 4 hours worth of cleaning. All it takes is a jealous DH in the building to report it.
Just my two cents worth it is of course up too you

Can anyone here actually offer any first hand experience of getting into trouble with the authorities for employing an "illegal" part-timer? Huge numbers of people do it, and I have never heard a credible, specific story of anyone getting into trouble for doing so.
