Am I eligable for HKID Card Hi, I am new to this forum and would be grateful if some one could advise me about a HK ID card. I am a UK national moving to Hong Kong. I intend to find casual work when I arrive in bars/restaurents initally. Will I need an ID card for this? Later I hope to find work as a TEFL teacher, this will be permanent work. Will I need an ID card for this? What supporting documentation will I need to provide to apply for the card? Thanks in advance.

Justinj, from my research, you would not be eligible for a HKID and would also not be eligible for work. In order to work, in whatever capcity, you need a work visa. HK permanent residents, those on valid work visas and their dependents, and people with the right to abode are those who get HKIDs. This is only my opinion and I am by no means an expert. I am sure that a look at Immigration's website, or an e-mail to Emigra, would give you greater clarification. All the best.

http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/hkvisas_4_2.htm The above site has the basic guidelines for getting a work visa. Bartendering would essentially be illegal, without a work visa of some sort.
