I would like to record my voice using a Microphone connected to the soundcard of my PC.

I have a Creative Xfi Extreme music soundcard which has what they call a Flexijack which switches between Mic and Digital I/O. as a Mic I am using a basic Skype style headset with the mouthpiece. i.e. not a fantastic mic for recording.

I have two problems
1) the volume of the voice coming through the system is very low (yes I have turned on Mic boost)
2) there is a very high level of residual noise when the Mic is taken off mute.

Anyone have any tips as to how I get a better performance from my set up.

Remember that it doesn't rely on windows settings. Creative has its own settings in the control panel. There you can set your mic settings, speaker settings and sound effects features.

My best guess is your volume is low in creative settings or worst case scenario is your used windows driver to install creative driver.

in that case please install creative software from package or download at http://soundblaster.com

Thanks for the reply. I resolved the problem by muting the mic on the playback options. Everything is clear as a bell now
