Cat immigration from the Philippines

Hi there,

we might be moving to HK soon. Being originally from Germany/Switzerland we currently live in Manila (Philippines) where we adopted three cats, which now are a part of our family. I already found out that bringing cats from the Philippines to HK requires a 4 months quarantaine stay for them (because of rabies in the Philippines). Our cats are neutered and spayed and have a proper health record. We rescued them as kitten from the streets and gave them a safe home.

1. does anybody have experience with Hk quarantaine station for pets?
2. can I visit my pets there? Where is it located? Is it reachable by public transport?
3. isn't there an easier and faster way to see if a pet has rabies? Isn't there some kind of test?

Cheers,
Tigger

1. No direct experience but know several people who have had to put their pets through quarantine.

2. Yes, you can visit - I think as often as you like within the times that the kennels are open.
There are more than 1 quarantine kennels in HK so I think you can request which one - certainly people in Sai Kung way have been using the nearest to us which is near the old airport in Kai tak.

3. From Philipines there is no easier way.
HK govt won't accept rabies titre tests from certain countries and unfortunately Philipines is on that list.

Re-thinking, there is a way you could avoid quarantine in HK but I doubt it would be very practical.

If your home country (or another country that is category 1) will accept them with minimum quarantine then you can ship to there first and then after 4-6 months consider moving them to HK again.

Haven't heard of anyone doing this from Philipines so it may be that Europe may also expect quarantine for all Philipine animals but I know people used to use when UK still had compulsory 6 months quarantine - would stop in France for 6 months on way home from HK to UK.

Obv defeats purpose if you need to be in HK fast.

Hi there,

We brought our dog over from the Philippines (originally from Canada) and, as far as I know, there is no other way around the 4 month quarantine. We've had her since she was 2months and up to date with all shots, as well as being spayed.

She's got another few months in there and we do visit her as much as we possibly can during their visiting hours. Unfortunately, their visiting hours are like regular office hours, but they are open 7 days a week, including public holidays.

Yes, we do take public transport.

Hope that helps, and good luck!

thank you very much for your replies. they helped a lot and we now know, that we have to look for a station possibly near to the place we will live (no clue at the moment where that will be).

shipping them to europe and back will be too stressfull for them. they'd have to get accustomed to new places a few times and the flight itself can be exhausting. not mentioning the costs for flight tickets etc....

thanks a lot and good luck to all of you.
