Howdy boys and girls! Just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and ask a few things.

25 year old male born and raised on the Jersey Shore, moving from NYC to HK by March 1st for a six month assignement, move date confirmation pending. Looking forward to taking in a new part of the world and rocking out in LKF... been reading up on it and the place looks sick.

Anyways, on to the questions:

1) Most important, beaches?? How far are they and when can I get some color?

2) From what I hear living around Central is the way to go. I am looking for something close to IFC and LKF where there is a strong expat presence.

3) What are the essentials to bring from the US that I can't get in HK? Do I need some sorta special converter for my ethernet on my laptop?

4) Any general tips from fellow expats would be much appreciated.

Looking forward to hearing from you all and can't wait for the first meet and greet when I am there.

I am gonna need a few drinking buddies to rock out with... anyone up for it?

What to buy from the US to bring to HK?

No, you do not need a converter for your ethernet or WiFI

Oh Know It All... I have been bouncing around here for days. I just like the individual attention.

And silvesterjay... Manhattan is an island too and swimming in that water would make me grow a third eye or a tail or something. Not saying there is anything wrong with extra eyes or tails. Just not my thing.

Some really nice beaches near Sai Kung in the new territories, but if you want closer, and some surf, Shek'O and Big Wave Beach, in the south-west of Hong Kong Island are great. It's not super clean, but it's ok enough for me to bring my kids there every weekend during the hotter months....

What to bring from the US? Nothing much really, unless you're a big GAP and Old Navy fan, because you'll find none of that here. I would say casual clothes and swimming trunks. OTC medecine if there are some brands you're used to.

Good Beaches: South Part of Hong Kong Island, Lantau, Lamma, Sai Kung, Clear Water Bay

What to get from home?
How big are you? If you are under 6 feet you can find everything here.

Central and LKF are expensive. Ask your boss whether you can afford it.

General Tips: within the next six months it will be wet, hot and windy.

So you can count on mold, sweat and maybe typhoons (hurricanes) if you are lucky.

Indoor temperature is about 15 degrees celsius all year round. Outdoor temperature is about 15 degrees now and 35 in summer.

So in Summer you might catch a cold as well.

hey, i'm moving from NYC to HK too, what moving company are you using?? beaches in HK are kinda... nasty, based on my childhood memories, not sure if they've cleaned up a bit...? but if you just wanna get color, the weather will help with that... not sure about going into the water. the harbor in HK is similar to the hudson (altho i've hear people have swam in the hudson?!)
