Have you eaten at Man Wah restaurant at the Mandarin?

Has anyone been here? Supposed to be flashy Cantonese.

Alternatively I was recommended The China Club but I went to David Tang's restaurant here in London and was not overly impressed by the food (although the decor was fun).

We are looking for a splurge, but Zagat has been unhelpful so far.

Any opinions?

I've eaten there about 3 or 4 years ago. If you're a fan of cantonese cooking .. a big fan, try it. If you're not a fan of canto food .. avoid.

I am not a fan as I tend to prefer northern food... sichuan, hunan, beijing / shanghai ..

China Club -- way overrated ..

Thanks...

I also prefer sichuan to cantonese, but being in HK, thought we should try cantonese! We wanted something really fun and kind of glam, but if the food's not worth it, I don't really want to go there.

Are you familiar with Shui Hu Ju (68 Peel St)? Northern food, it's on our list as well, but now I'm thinking maybe instead of Man Wah?

Or what about Hutong (kowloon) - supposed to be modern peking?

Shui Hu Ju is pretty good, though a bit overpriced for what it really is. But I still go because (a) it's never failed food-wise, and (b) it's easy to get to. I say give it a go for sure, if you like Northern food!

I also really like Bistro Manchu on Elgin Street...love going in a group of 4-6 so we can order a bunch of dishes and share it all. It's Manchurian and Northern Chinese food...very yum. Not quite the glam situation you're looking for, just very solid food.

Shui Fu Ju is good but I totally agree that it's a bit overpriced. And I also agree that it's easy to get to, ingenue, haha ! And it's always full I think.

I haven't been to Man Wah in Mandarin yet but have been to the cafe many times. I don't really highly recommend it because I've tried Chinese, Thai, pizza, pasta, soup, dessert, coffee, etc, but I only recommend the Hainan chicken rice and probably the minestrone.

Hutong is also on my list and I heard they are overpriced, too, but I guess if you are going for the view, you wouldn't mind. Oh there's a minimum charge I think.

If you really like Sichuan, I think you should try Da Pin Huo.
