Software Professional

hi,
I am an indian software professional with 6.5 yrs of exp.
Currently working in singapore on not so great salary as I am working here through and indian firm.

I have seen a few hong kong opportunities but not able to decide on them with limited information I have.
Need your help for making the decision.
1. Do Investment banks have development work in hongkong or it's just support ?
2. I have been told that the package would be somewhere around 600K HKD. Is this OK for a IT pro in an investment bank ?
3. Are there many indian eateries available in Hongking for daily lunch/dinner etc ? I mean is the life comfortable for indians in terms of availability of indian food and grocery ? (in singaore we have mustafa which seems to have anything and everything which an Indian wants!!!)

regards,

WannaComeToHKG

There is certainly development work in banks here, but recently there seems to be a general push to move a lot of it out to lower-cost centres like Singapore and India. Even support is being moved offshore. In my opinion a lot of work will come back in a year or two when the immediate cost savings have been had, and people start realising what effect it's having on quality and responsiveness.... but that's another thread (really need to write a good rant on that one at some point).

Work? Nope, there's no work here...

Well, alright, maybe there's some, but those of us who are here don't need the competition, you hear?

Okay, okay, come, but you'll have to fight us for the available work...

Uh...

Seriously? If you're a banking-type guy, with a few years experience and a decent qualification or two, you shouldn't have much trouble finding something here, I'd think. I've got more experience than you, but not in the sort of thing banks want, and I've had trouble - but from my searching, it does seem there's a reasonable amount of bank work. As Doug says - and he knows better than I do - there may well be less now than there was, and there may be more in the future, but there's still some now.

And yes, there are lots of Indians, and Indian eateries in HK - not as many as in Singapore, probably, but I wouldn't think it would be a problem. Plus, uh, y'know - there's plenty of non-Indian food here as well

Most bank development work is out of London, with Japan taking up the remainder. Other areas are just localizations, with China showing some attention.

I.T. isn't a strong skill in HK, a lot of the hardware vendors outsource their development through Taiwan for example.

Yup I'd give up on the whole idea of working in software support here in hk, I'm not even bothering to apply even with 6 years experience under my belt.

I'm moving into something else which is more lucrative and better long term, I have some meetings lined up next week.

p.s its not sales!

Yup been back a week now.

Just sorting out my i.d paperwork and meeting headhunters.

Might be a short visit this time though. As I'm booked to go back to London on the beginning of march, so if no firm offers on the table by then I'll give up for good, As I'm losing money by staying here in HK!

Same boat as you guys. I.T. is definitely not the thing here. The clout is in finance. I will most likely leave next month. Doubt I can ever make it back here without finance. One of those lovable chicken and egg things. Oh well. Que Sera.
