| Well, after being here as a resident for a few weeks, I love the city, the people, and the food. And if you think HK people are rude, don't go to Taipei or Shanghai!
That being said, I'd have to slightly disagree with Carang. While I agree that adapting to local culture is an imperative for enjoying life overseas, I do not think that that is the point here. When a person cuts in line, shoves you, etc. most HK people DO find it impolite, so it's not a matter of "this culture does not consider that rude".
I'm a little tired of hearing people defend local rude behavior by saying that that is a cultural difference. It's not. Expats consider it rude and complain. Locals consider it rude and accept it. In most cases, cultural differences do not play a role in what we consider rude.
Broadly speaking from my experience, Taiwanese are rude compared to HK people. HK people are rude compared to Americans. Americans (and everyone else) are rude compared to Japanese. You just need to decide if the good outweighs the bad. For us, it certainly does. |
