That means even tri-band or quad-band GSM phones do not work in Japan. So the iPhone will not work in Japan: so not very advanced.
That's a redundant comment- most phones don't work in Japan, or vice versa, it doesn't mean that they are not advanced, simply that they are different.
Has it ever occurred to you that the possible 1 year delay until the launch in Asia is so that configurations can be modified to suit different networks?

In other news, Apple does not own the iPhone trademark.

Nope. It is (in my opinion) delayed so that they can negotiate carrier deals. Remember, Apple for the first time (as far as I can recall) needs the support of a channel that they have never negotiated with.

Also, from what I remember reading, the SIM card just slides in from the top, so you can eject and change SIM cards. I want to know why Asia doesn't get one till 2008 though.
Not true : my T-mobile phone in the US had a SIM card....

3G version is under development, I wouldn't be surprised if it camein time for the European launch... very hard to launch high-end phones in Europe without 3G.

Elsewhere it was mentioned that Cisco and Apple have drafted a deal about the use of iPhone name, but no ink on the paper yet it seems.

Sorry, my comment was yesterday's news, Cisco's Apple deal seems to have gone sour as so many companies' deals with Apple, today's news is that Cisco is sueing Apple:

http://money.cnn.com/2007/01/10/technology/cisco_apple/

There's no certainty about 3G, Jobs simply said that Apple intends to make 3G phones in the future. But if they can't get one ready by the European launch this will likely be a fairly marginal product there...

If you believe NYT gossip:
Quote:
The device is not currently compatible with the faster 3G wireless data networks that are driving sharp gains in cellular revenues in the United States, although several Apple insiders said the phone could be upgraded to 3G with software if Apple later decides to do so.

With software? Would have thought you'd need to change chipsets.

A phone that works in both would be considered more advanced, and 3G provides that. Its all semantic games as advanced means many things of which compatibility is one, and features is another ...
